Inside, the magazine laid out an ambitious, multi-page “How-To” guide for homeowners willing to roll up their sleeves, grab a shovel, and build a 16-by-32-foot swimming pool right in their backyard from scratch.

It got us thinking: swimming pools have come an incredibly long way over the last six decades. Yet, in the most important respects, nothing has changed at all.

While today’s pools are engineered for immense structural integrity, the DIY pool of 1961 relied on hollow concrete cinder blocks laid laterally with a 2-inch overhang to act as coping. Homeowners were instructed to mortar the block openings, apply a cement-plaster waterproof mix, and finish the interior with basic masonry paint.
Even more incredible? The 8-foot-deep diving bowl was literally dug out by hand after the masonry walls were built, using the excavated earth as backfill around the outside of the blocks.
